Cloudy Smoke Spicy Squid
Cloudy Smoke Series aims to achieve the highest possible level of attraction that can be imparted to a fishing bait. It targets both the olfactory sense—on a chemical level—and the visual sense in most cyprinid species.
There are many similar products on the market, but you should consider the following key points for a proper evaluation:
ATTRACTANTS – This refers primarily to the flavour, but our recipe also includes Thaumatin sweetener and dissolved Betaine HCl.
For flavours, Select Baits made a rigorous selection from a huge variety available, but everything came down to proven long-term effectiveness. If a flavour had made history across Europe, it had a chance to be included in the recipe. Available in the following flavours: Spicy Squid, Shellfish Plum, Tutti Frutti, Extreme Garlic, Strawberry Garlic, Pineapple n-Butyric Acid, Scopex Cream, Classic Sweetcorn, and Squid Cranberry. The flavours are based on alcohols or esters—solvents that disperse rapidly throughout the water column.
The sweetener we use is Thaumatin, a signature product for Select Baits. It has a pleasant, sweet taste, but most importantly, it is naturally derived from the root of an African plant. Unlike synthetic sweeteners, it poses no risk of deterring fish.
Each bottle contains a small dose of Betaine Hydrochloride (HCl). We included this ingredient due to its low pH (approx. 5), compared to water (approx. 8). In water, betaine acts for fish like a battery leaking current. At the level of the chemoreceptors (olfactory sense), Betaine HCl is like a lightbulb shining in the dark.
COLOUR – The visual element is what makes this type of product special. Unlike a classic dip, Cloudy Smoke liquids disperse into a thick cloud (hence the name) with a strong contrast in the water column. If you've never seen the effect of a single drop of this liquid in water, you'll be surprised the first time! It’s an explosion of colour erupting in all directions, carrying signals to nearby fish.
We chose classic colours: red, green, and orange. The clearer the water and the more light that penetrates, the more effective this liquid becomes. However, don't hesitate to use it in silty or deep waters, as the aroma carried by the cloud will still catch the carp’s attention.
DENSITY – This is mentioned last, as it’s easy to overlook but just as important as olfactory attractants or colour. If the liquid is too dense, it will sink and settle on the bottom near the bait. This is not necessarily bad, but its effect is limited. If it's too thin, it will disperse too quickly and the fish may not have enough time to locate the source of attraction.
The optimal value ensures slow dispersion with a vertical action while keeping the source active for as long as possible.
Try Cloudy Smoke liquids whenever you get the chance. They're affordable and only a small amount is needed, but sometimes just a few drops on the hookbait or PVA bag can make the difference and awaken the carp’s sensors.
